Mudigere

Mudigere is a panchayat town in Chikmagalur district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is 35 km from district headquarters. The famous piligrim places like Dharmasthala (64 km), Horanadu(64 km), Kalasa(52 km), Sringeri(90 km) are near by to the town. Poorna Chandra Tejaswi, the well known Kannada writer had settled in this town till his death here in 2007.

 

Geography

Mudigere is located at 13°08′N 75°38′E / 13.13°N 75.63°E / 13.13; 75.63. It has an average elevation of 915 metres (3001 feet).
It is a sleepy little town surrounded by coffee plantations. Also the famous temple Bettada Byraweshwara near Mekanagadde which is 25 km from Mudigere is one of the best tourist place in Chickmagaluru, and also the College of Horticulure, which offers professional degree in Horticuture and Master's degree in Horticultural sciences (a sub-campus of the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot) is situated in Mudigere. Apart from this Zonal Horticultural Research Station, Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Krishi Vigyan Kendra are involving in conducting research and extension activities in the Hill zone of Karnataka. It is a beautiful place with the natural diversity coming under the 8 hotspots of the world. The annual rainfall is typically very high ranging from 3000–3500 mm./year. A lot of Kannada movies have been shot here due to its mystical beauty.

 

Demographics

As of 2001[update] India census, Mudigere had a population of 8962. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Mudigere has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 79%. In Mudigere, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. Mudigere is have a degree college also.
