Mudigere - Demography


Majority portion of this taluk is mountainous Mudigere is one among the seven taluks in Chikmagalur, this taluk is situated in sourthern part of the district which covers 16% of the total area in the district, the total geographical area of Mudigere is 115 sq. km and out of which 15% covers in forest area which is around 30,604 hectares.

Mudigere is surrounded by other taluks like Belur of Hassan district in its eastern side, Karkala taluk in its western side, Chikmagalur taluk in its north and a part of Sakleshpura taluk of Hassan towards its south.

, hence it is a ghat range and further the Kudremukh hills have been chained to this taluk to make it deep valley and steep precipices with a natural beauty.

Mudigere has an average elevation of around 915 meters or 3,001 feet above sea level, this taluk has a sleepy and a small town which is surrounded by coffee plantations all around.

Mudigere – A nature’s bless

Mudigere is blessed with a fertile soil in nature with having a water holding capacity, the soil here is red gravely in nature, which is more suitable for plantation crops like coffee, cardamom, pepper, areca nut and coconut.

The rivers like Bhadra which sometimes rises at Gangamoola in its north-western part of Mudigere and the length of the river Bhadra is about 32 km, a dam is also constructed near Lakkavalli on this river which also helps to generate power, the other famous river Hemavathy a source at Javali in Mudigere is one of main tributary of the river Kaveri.

Mudigere – Rainfall and climate

The tropical climate is always here at this taluk, which sometimes humid for major part of the year and too hot in summer seasons, sometimes the humidity have crossed 90% of its normal rate, one can find cold season between December to February, but the hot season is followed from March to May.

Mudigere has seen the average rainfall of about 2,586 mm, heavy cloudy and overcast during monsoon seasons, with light winds but severe during May to September from south west and south east.

Mudigere – Administrative factors

Mudigere is an Panchayat town in Chikmagalur district, the well known writer in Kannada Purnachandra Tejasvi son of well known personality Kuvempu was here till 2007.

The famous temples like Bettada Byraveswara near Mekanagadde, 25 km away from Mudigere, overall Mudigere is one of the best place to visit.

Mudigere – Population

According to 2001 Census report this taluk had total population of 8,962, out of which 51% constitutes male population the remaining 49% is female population, this taluk is having an literacy rate of 82% and out of which 85% is male literacy and 79% is female literacy, out of the total population 10% belongs to the population of 6 years or less.

Mudigere constitutes 12% of districts population, out of total population 13% are in urban places and the remaining in rural areas the density of population here in this taluk is 122 persons per sq. km, and the sex ratio is 996 males per 1000 females.

Mudigere - Forest areas

This taluk is rich in forest resources, out of the total area of 1,15,495 hectares, 30,604 hectares are covered in forest area and only 26% available for land use.

The important forest products here in this taluk are Teakwood, Rosewood, Bamboo, Nandi, Honne, Eucalyptus and firewood, other products includes Sigekai, Antwala, Cinnamon leaves, honey, bee wax and halmadi.

Mudigere - Tourism

The district Chikmagalur has the unique distinction of having major places of interest likes of Halebeedu, Shravanabelagola, Melukote, Sringeri, Baba Budan hills, Kemmanagundi, Dathathreya Peeta, Kudremukh, Ayyanakere and Khandya to name few. Other places which also includes Horanadu, Kalasa, Ballarayana Durga etc.

Mudigere - Education

Mudigere consists of several schools out of which 228 primary schools with an intake of 18,769, 25 high schools with an 2,925 strength, 6 pre-university colleges with 1,591 intake capacity and 1 degree college with 397 students.

Mudigere – Fruit and spice production

As being the major portions in this taluk covered with forest area, many fruits were produced here at this taluk like Mango, Banana, Sapota, Citrus, Jack fruit etc.

Spice items like Pepper, Cardamom, Ginger, etc were the main products one can find here, other plantation crops like coconut, areca nut, etc were also richly produced here.

Mudigere

Mudigere is a panchayat town in Chikmagalur district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is 35 km from district headquarters. The famous piligrim places like Dharmasthala (64 km), Horanadu(64 km), Kalasa(52 km), Sringeri(90 km) are near by to the town. Poorna Chandra Tejaswi, the well known Kannada writer had settled in this town till his death here in 2007.

 

Geography

Mudigere is located at 13°08′N 75°38′E / 13.13°N 75.63°E / 13.13; 75.63. It has an average elevation of 915 metres (3001 feet).
It is a sleepy little town surrounded by coffee plantations. Also the famous temple Bettada Byraweshwara near Mekanagadde which is 25 km from Mudigere is one of the best tourist place in Chickmagaluru, and also the College of Horticulure, which offers professional degree in Horticuture and Master's degree in Horticultural sciences (a sub-campus of the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot) is situated in Mudigere. Apart from this Zonal Horticultural Research Station, Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Krishi Vigyan Kendra are involving in conducting research and extension activities in the Hill zone of Karnataka. It is a beautiful place with the natural diversity coming under the 8 hotspots of the world. The annual rainfall is typically very high ranging from 3000–3500 mm./year. A lot of Kannada movies have been shot here due to its mystical beauty.

As of 2001[update] India census, Mudigere had a population of 8962. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Mudigere has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 79%. In Mudigere, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. Mudigere is have a degree college also.
